Christmas markets in Salzburg and Vienna

The Christmas markets in Salzburg are a true Winter’s delight. Roofs and towers of the Old Town are covered with snow and the atmosphere is romantic and evocative. The Residenz Square market is more than comparable to those in Vienna, Paris and Dresden. The square is entirely lit by stars. At wooden huts at the foot of the Hohensalzburg Fortress you can find traditional handicrafts and home-cooked food, against a background of lilting Christmas carols. In the birthplace of Mozart, music obviously has a leading role. The Mirabell Palace, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Residenz and many churches are the places where you can enjoy top-quality concerts, while the Salzburger Advent Singing, the most important musical event during Advent, can be enjoyed at the Grosses Festspielhaus during the weekends.

Vienna hosts around 25 markets in and around the capital city. Dramatic lighting, elegant decorations, classical music and evocative scents have made the Wiener Christkindlmark romantic and magical for the last seven hundred years. Rathaus Square becomes a shining fairytale land. More than one hundred stands offer Christmas gifts, tree decorations, warming drinks and a lot of sweets! The Schönbrunn Christmas Market held in front of the magnificent Neo-classical palace is the most romantic market in Vienna. Its picturesque stalls offer traditional Austrian delicacies, such as strawberries covered in chocolate and gingerbread, all in an absolutely unique Baroque setting.

Other European Christmas markets

Other European Christmas markets make a vacation truly worthwhile: in Dresden you can visit the oldest German market (1434). You can also enjoy the glittering Christmas market of Strasbourg (France); experience the warm atmosphere of lights and sounds of the amazing Grand Place in Brussels (Belgium); or search for precious Bohemian crystals among the yuletide stalls in the streets of Prague (Czech Republic). There’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit!!
